Description
The Akathist Hymn is a service of the Orthodox Church that invites the faithful to rejoice in the unique and sublime role the Virgin Mary played in the salvation of mankind. The Divine Incarnation is at the heart of this glorious telling in the form of hymns and prose, for it was in the Virgins own womb that God became a man. In extolling the Blessed Virgin, the Church is fulfilling the Scriptures of her own prophecy which states that henceforth all generations shall call me blessed (Lk 1:48), and in the words of the inspired Elizabeth, blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. (Lk 1:42).
ReviewBy: Fr. Apostolos Hill
Perhaps the best known set of hymns to the Mother of God in Orthodox worship, the Akathist Hymn has been recorded quite often. Eikona's rendering of it is a very fine undertaking. The sister's make something of a departure in this project by first chanting the eirmos that begins each Ode in Greek before repeating it in English. This is essential for anyone seeking to learn the hymn in English as the melodic and syllabic pattern is firmly established in the Greek original. The translation prepared by Holy Transfiguration Monastary is superbly done. The pace of the canon is a bit rushed at the beginning but it smoothes out in later odes. An exquisite rendering of the hymn To Thee the Champion Leader is provided in Greek however, curiously, the pace of the English version seems much faster. As with their other works, aspirants to the psalterion would be wise to include this CD in their A-list of must-haves.
