Fr. Apostolos Hill
Sitting at the apex of Orthodoxy's Liturgical life, the Divine Liturgy is that for which the best that we have is held in reserve. This recording by the monks of the Simonopetra monastary does no less. The exultant and ethereal Trisagion hymn on track two, for example, conveys a sense of the timelessness of the liturgy. The singers voices blend nicely in these more ornamented and lengthy selections and the production, though limited, does not detract. Most practicing Orthodox will be familiar with many of these hymns though not all owing to the differences between the monastic and cathedral rites. The music may stretch the attention span of the less initiated listener since it is more complicated than the more accessible idiomela setting of Byzantine chant but it is worth investing the time into developing a greater appreciation for the nuances of Eastern Christian sacred chant.
