Communion, or the Mystical Supper, is a gathering together on the day of the Lord's Resurrection each Sunday, during which we partake of the divine, holy, immortal, and life-giving and dread mysteries of Christ. These are the cross, the grave, the third-day resurrection, the ascension into heaven, the sitting at the right hand, the second and glorious coming. We experience the Eschaton mystically in the Divine Liturgy in anticipation of that which is to come in the fullness of time. The invitation comes from heaven; the banquet takes place in heaven; and the focus of the event is on the Mystical Supper. The Boston Byzantine Choir has drawn from a variety of sources to make one of the first English settings of St. John Chrysostom's Liturgy done entirely in Byzantine chant.

This, the second work of the Boston Byzantine Choir, is in the same vein as their first. Mystical Supper is a very good, albeit somewhat simplified, rendering of the Liturgy in English. Drawing from such sources as Kazan, Hadjinicolaou, and Kastanas, the music stays squarely in the Byzantine tradition. The 23 tracks of the recording include all of the main points of the Liturgy so that it imparts the essence of the service in a complete and prayerful way. The voices blend nicely and the ambiance of the church in which this was recorded is decently conveyed. A very good recording for relative newcomers to Byzantine music or for anyone looking for a very good rendering of the Divine Liturgy in English.
