Description
On this CD, Boston Byzantine Choir continues their work of recording traditional Byzantine chant in English. This selection of hymns begins with Lazarus Saturday (the Saturday preceding Palm Sunday) and continues through Holy and Great Friday. The recording includes well known Holy Week hymns such as the "Troparion for Lazarus Saturday," "Behold the Bridegroom," "Thy Bridal Chamber," and the "Lamentations." It also features some new and unique offerings such as "Rejoice, O Bethany" (a hymn for Palm Sunday from Palestine), "Out of the Mouths of Babes," and the rendition of the "Hymn of Kassiani." The CD includes liner notes with an introduction by Fr. Anthony Hughes, and full hymn text in English.
ReviewBy: Benjamin Williams
Listening to this recording, two observations immediately come to mind. The first is that the Boston Byzantine Choir, while continuing their work of recording traditional Byzantine chant in English, have matured and developed significantly since their first recording. The overall tone and richness of the sound, as well as the nuance and passion conveyed in the singing, make it a very mature offering. The second is that this is clearly a choir firmly grounded in the Antiochian (Arabic Orthodox) Byzantine chant tradition -- and that is good! Nine of the nineteen tracks are arranged by either Basil Kazan, Bishop Basil Essey, or are traditional Arabic melodies. Most of the rest of the arrangements are from Holy Transfiguration Monastery, a publisher of traditional (Greek) arrangements. Thus while the text is familiar, the melody often has a different nuance, or even a very different presentation. Besides offering the well known hymns of Holy Week, this CD features some less common ones ("Out of the Mouth of Babes" and "Rejoice, O Bethany") and presents many with a distinctive Arab Orthodox flavor, such as the "Hymn of Kassiani," the "15th Antiphon of Holy Friday," and the three Stases of the Lamentations. This CD is well recorded and edited, and the sound is both clear and clean, and full and rich. It carries you into the motion of Holy Week: just listening to it is an edifying experience.
