ReviewBy: Benjamin Williams
Once again Boston Byzantine Choir delivers a recording of Byzantine chant in English, characterized by their sonorous and melodious Byzantine chant in English. This is a compilation of chant from Great Lent, and as Lent is a journey to Holy Week and Pascha, the title appropriately captures the intent of the work. The hymn collection includes many that are readily recognizable, and quite a few that will evoke wonder - which is to say unless you attend all the Lenten services (including those of the Triodion) you may wonder what you are hearing. Included in the latter category are Foolishly I Sprang Away and By The Waters Of Babylon, here made accessible in a massed choir voice. What comes through across the hymn selection is a rendition of the hymns fully appropriate to the season, presented in a clear and uplifting voice, and can do nothing but encourage and uplift the listener. For example, the hymns sung during Great Lent that are also sung during the rest of the liturgical year are arranged differently-and supposed to sound differently for a reason ? it is a penitential time. Wait till you hear God Is With Us, which is not a triumphant proclamation, as much as it is a multi-voiced and antiphonal statement couched with the hope and expectation that anticipates the Resurrection. And the same qualities carry through the last two hymns, To Thee The Champion Leader and Awed By The Beauty?hymns to the Theotokos perfectly fitting for the season. Fr. Nicholas Kastanas of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology describes ?Lenten Journey? as being ?blessed with the spirit of sweet holiness, and chanted in the traditional Byzantine Musicological style with gracious hospitality, effectiveness, consistency and lovely detail!?
