While described as a "Christmas" recording, this CD is primarily a compilation of hymns from Liturgy and Vespers by a cross section of the greatest Russian composers, sung by some of the most well-known choirs. This is a budget CD on Brilliant Classics, licensed from other labels that originally released the recordings. No liner notes or hymn text.

Aside from the limitation of no liner notes or hymn text, this CD has everything else going for it. It is a cross section of composers such as Tchaikovsky, Lyubimov, Rachmaninov, Gretchaninov, Manolov, Zinoviev, Kedrov and Bortnyansky. The choirs include Choir of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Bulgarian National Choir and The Angeloglasny Ensemble, with 7 hymns featuring the basso profundo of Boris Christoff. The quality of the recording is very good, and the overall impression is both festal and meditative. A great value and a wonderful experience.
