As subtitled, "Orthodox liturgical solos, duets and trios," this recording is a collection of hymnology sung by a small ensemble. This project is a fund raiser for PSALM, the Pan-Orthodox Society for the Advancement of Liturgical Music. Under the direction of Vladimir Morosan, this group of singers presents the Russian choral tradition, counterpointed with some solo and trio singing. While the hymnology is not limited to Great Lent and Holy Week, the majority falls within that festal season. Also included are hymns from Ascension, Pentecost and the Feast of Sts. Peter & Paul (the namesake of the church where it was recorded). Sung in English, with a limited liner insert, no hymn text.

This is a delightful, high quality and inspiring recording that presents a broad range of hymnology (principally Lenten and Paschal) in a variety of chant forms from a wide cross section of arrangements. The ensemble is composed of two sopranos, altos, tenors and bass, and they are exquisite. The voices are clear and precise and the recording has a crystal clear quality. The hymn selection is both representational of the season and unique, and includes the Prokimenon and Old Testament reading from the Matins of Holy Saturday. Even though the hymn selection is Lenten, and much is appropriately somber and penitential in feeling, the anticipated joy comes through in the vibrancy of the presentation. The quality of the recording is very good, delivering a sense of being present in a sacred setting with very good acoustics -- where in fact it was recorded. This CD is highly recommended as a representative recording of Russian liturgical chant sung in English.
