This performance by the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral Choir under the direction of Irina Denisova is a moving selection of Lenten and Holy Week hymns, and a testament both to the choir and the director. All of the singers are professional musicians, and the selection of hymns and their performance beautifully contrasts the male and female voices in the choir, which pulls the listener into a rich and spiritual experience?driven by the selection of material and the performance itself. The inclusion of old chant forms with contemporary arrangements is likewise positive and engaging. This cross-section of the hymnology of Great Lent, Holy Week and Pascha builds through the anticipation of the sorrow and anguish of Lent and Holy Week to the glory of its conclusion in Pascha.
