Description
This CD, No. 9 in the Century series, focuses on songs of the Renaissance, that is to say, mainly on the non-sacred polyphonic compositions of the names we know so well. By doing so it reminds us of the breadth of composition work done by almost all of these composers, and by illustrating the movement of the Medieval and Renaissance developmental process from sacred to secular, begins to lay the foundation for what we now think of as "classical music."
ReviewBy: Benjamin Williams
This compilation includes a few sacred compositions, but mainly offers secular songs and madrigals. Most of us don't appreciate that such well-known composers as Desprez, Non Papa, De Lassus and Byrd composed as much or more secular material. In addition to polyphonic Franco-Flemish songs, very good examples of the revival of the Italian Madrigal and of corresponding madrigal songs in England are included . Liner notes in English and French, no hymn text.
