This is the second Choral Masterworks recording of Russian liturgical music (actually the third in the series), and is another collection of magnificent recordings in the tradition of Russian choral singing. The hymnology ranges from the Divine Liturgy to the Lenten Bridegroom Service to the All-Night Vigil. Composers include Komitas, Rachmaninov and Rimsky-Korsakov. Liner notes include a complete description of each hymn, but no text. Sung in Church Slavonic.
ReviewBy: Benjamin Williams
A glorious sound and an eclectic collection. The emphasis of the hymns collected here is transcendent peace, and it is conveyed beautifully. However, it is a collection of hymns and excerpts, and thus not representative of any single liturgical service of season. With that said, however, it is a superb example of the transcendent wonder of Russian choral singing, and achieves the goal of the producer: "transporting the listener to realms beyond worldly cares." These are some of the most peaceful and beautiful examples of sacred choral music from Russia.
